The company contacted us for help after they had a number of serious incidents which resulted in the HSE visiting them. This activated a fee for the HSE’s intervention process and cost them thousands!!! That wasn’t the worst of it!
Unless they could demonstrate they were taking the situation seriously and putting the right people, processes, and procedures in place, they were looking at, prosecution, heavy fines, and a possible custodial sentence… and would struggle to get insurance, inevitably lose work, and possibly be forced out of business completely.
We got straight on the case, visiting them, auditing what they already had in place (it didn’t take long!) and reviewed their processes. We also looked at the specific incidents which had taken place.
Our findings showed that they had no appointed person. If, and when, risk assessments had been carried out, they were not adequate. And their documentation was poor, where it existed.
We offered them solutions, assuring them we could help support and protect them.
We carried out an initial GAP analysis.
We reviewed and supported them with risk assessments and the creation of their Health and Safety policies and documentation.
We also provided training.
The HSE are satisfied that the company now has all the correct controls in place and are taking health and safety seriously. Whilst they have signed this off, they will still visit the company to make periodic checks that everything is being complied with. The company’s legal team and insurance company are also now happy everything is in place as it should be.
Over and above all of that, the company now has a safer working environment, has seen an increase in productivity, and has a workforce who are happy to be there. We have built such a solid relationship with them, that they actually pay to have extra monthly visits from us to ensure there’s nothing they could be doing better! Outcomes like this are exactly why we love our jobs!
The general construction industry (trades) has the second highest rate of workplace injury and a significant rate of work-related ill health. (Source: Labour Force Survey annual average estimate 2081/19-2020/21)
What if someone falls off a ladder, trips and falls into foundations, gets a limb caught in machinery… all these things happen daily, and the company has a responsibility!
The HSE takes health and safety at work extremely seriously and will fine and prosecute companies who do not comply to regulations.
Accidents can and do happen. Usually when least expected. If an accident occurred in your business and you were prosecuted, could your business survive?
You would lose workers, potentially lose contracts, and would almost certainly lose your good reputation.
It is increasingly important that trades businesses take their responsibilities seriously. With good workers becoming harder and harder to find, apprentices are a source of gold. But you will not be able to employ apprentices without the correct health and safety in place.
